SAN JOSE 11

I was on my way to San Jose, just like the song. There I would be picked up by Joe Lopez, foreman of the huge operation we had going in nearby Fremont. I was to stay at his home, with him and his family, until I understood the mechanics of his plant operation sufficiently to step in and take over if necessary. It was obvious what I was there for, and it made for a slightly uncomfortable situation.

He seemed to think that we might be making plans to get rid of him. We really weren't. They had a nice tract home in San Jose. His wife and kids were okay, not too loud. She cooked a great Mexican dinner for us. I had to convince him that I wasn't there for the purpose he thought. I saw this as another enticing challenge, a paradox. He didn't believe me. I could practice up on rule number three.

I decided to approach it from the angle that I was there to use his operation as a model I said I understood his was an excellent operation with everything under control and could be used as exemplary, a model, to be emulated in all our Anheuser-Busch centers. We were already working from Washington to Southern California, and our next moves would be to set up centers in Phoenix and Denver. After all, this was true.

He was pretty astounded with this thought, awed in fact, and took a different stance toward me, more respect, deference. I was pretty proud of this, and decided to go downtown for a couple of cool ones. I had Joe drop me off in a little village like area. I went to the Bank of America I think it was, and found out I couldn't cash the little check I had from Galaxy. It was no good. There was no money in their account. It was only for $100, just pocket money for the trip back.

I was so pissed off I went right over to a Western Union office. I called our home office, and told them to cable me that $100 right now, within one hour, or I was leaving, that was it. I went across the street and had a couple of beers and waited. I went back to Western Union in about an hour and a half, picked up my money and took off.

In the interim, my cousin Gary, who was still helping them out while I was gone, had delivered the money. Someone in the office had a vague notion that I wasn't serious, but he corrected their thinking. I guess Hobbs and Payne had talked things over with Gary again, and had come to an understanding. I was glad of that, because we were cousins, and he definitely looked out for me. He needed the job.

Life in San Jose was ultimate nothingness. I couldn't get away soon enough. I spent one day, about three hours, at the warehouse. That was all I needed. A lot of money was represented in those cans.
